Dubai Airline Fined

Emirates Air, a Dubai based airline, was fined along with JetBlue by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) for limiting the compensation provided to travelers for lost or damaged luggage. The airlines were fined $100,000 for violating the terms of an international treaty, and JetBlue was fined an additional $50,000 for federal aviation violations over deceptive pricing practices.
Emirates Air was found to be in violation of the Montreal Convention, which is an international agreement governing liability limits for international airline travel. The treaty holds airlines responsible for lost, damaged or delayed baggage up to a set limit of $1,820 and it forbids airlines from setting lower compensation limits on international flights. It also bars carriers from refusing compensation for high value items such as jewelry, electronics and the like.
